...to discuss!

.................................... Natural Hair ..........................................Weave

Today's discussion is the on going and heated topic in the black community; weaves. For a long time now weaves have been growing popular among black women and it is only coming into the public light now because of its grown popularity among celebrities. Even though the weave has a current popularity it has a much deeper root. The pledge against wigs, weaves and perms started during slavery. Back in slavery men and women would perm their hair in attempt to be accepted by the white masters. Hence the reason why weaves have become a problem in the black community as unnatural hair is considered a weakness and enabling of white supremacy. Another reason that the "weave" topic is heated is because their is a certain belief that it is specifically the darker women who wear weaves. This adds fuel to the fire because often the light skinned woman with longer hair are seen as better than the dark women with shorter hair. This often leads to segregation between the light skinned women and the dark skinned women. Light skinned women sometimes feel they are better than the darker women or are sometimes judged by the darker women and hated because of this. The reason for this is again because the lighter women bare a closer resemblance to the Caucasian women.

However, now it is not just black women who are wearing weaves and it is no longer for acceptance. Many black women who have long hair naturally choose to wear weaves because they believe that it is easier to handle or they feel it is safer to change weaves instead of making risky choices with their own hair. Personally I believe that if a woman wishes to wear a weave then she should go for it regardless of her race, just as long as she has confidence in who she is. For centuries black women who wear weaves have been accused of self hate and accused of wanting to be Caucasian: well wake up world! It is not only whites that have silky straight hair. You can get that same hair across the globe from India , to China and even some parts in Africa. If wearing a weave is what you choose to do, then do it!
